Let The Learning Begin! Jonathan Sprinkles and Magic Johnson! #DDA2014

Snapshot 1 (3-11-2014 8-23 AM)I have so much to share about the 2014 Disney Dreamers Academy, I could probably write a book! I will try my best to sum it up in a few posts. Students arrived and were welcomed by people who are focused on their dreams and goals. Mickey also joined the festivities. 10,000 students across the country applied and 100 were chosen. The spectacular learning experience has been developed to help these dreamers with tools they can use for their future. Mini sessions fill out the first couple of days (of course there was plenty of time for the students to experience the thrills of Disney World).

sprinklesAfter a wonderful breakfast Friday morning, Wynton Harvey welcomed Dreamers and introduced Jonathan Sprinkles. Mr. Sprinkles is one of the most sought after speakers and entrepreneurs in the country. He ‘sprinkled’ his wisdom and humor to create a light-hearted and purpose filled environment for the dreamers. His message hit home with many students when he said “Never play the victim role in your own life story”. He continues “FAILURE is just life’s way of showing how committed you are”! He informed all the young minds that he read each and every one of their essays the submitted. He told them that while reading them, when it asked ‘tell us about yourself’, most started with … I come from a single parent family. “This is not you… this is your circumstance”, he said.

100_3129I found him down to earth and zoomed in on the attitude these Dreamers need to succeed in their chosen professions. As he said, “The  dream is free, to make it a reality will cost you. Will you pay the cost?”

I believe we all took some lessons from him. I know Jonathan Sprinkles had a huge impact on me. Just to add to the magic of Mr Sprinkles, I really am impressed how he had 100 teenagers in their seats for nearly an hour… and they were hanging on his every word. Miraculous!

Magic Johnson Speaks to Disney Dreamers Academy at Walt Disney World ResortOK! Tell me who would not want 20 minutes with Magic Johnson? Well, DUH! ME!

Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Jr. is a retired American professional basketball player. He played Point-guard for the Los Angeles Lakers (NBA) for 13 seasons. Since he retired, Mr. Johnson has been an advocate for HIV/Aids prevention and safe sex, as well as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, broadcaster, and a motivational speaker.

Magic Johnson Speaks to Disney Dreamers Academy at Walt Disney World ResortMr. Johnson presented the concept of how you should consider yourself a ‘Brand’. “All of you are a brand. What you do with that brand is important”, he said. He went on to explain how Magic Johnson, the basketball player, was a brand. Sometimes you need to reinvent a new brand much like he has done in business when he decided to invest in Urban America.

Johnson advises the group, “To become your brand you need to make a plan and execute it, then adapt and adjust your plan as needed.”

Here is a little more of Magic Johnson’s thoughts…

I can’t begin to tell you how exciting it was to hear from these two gentlemen. All of the students were very attentive  and excited to be a part of these presentations.

Just hang on and I will tell you about more great sessions, Deep Dives And a few Dreamers!

I love the part about Magic Johnson and the “brand” talk. Took me a long time to understand that I was a brand all alone. Great to hear that the kids are getting useful information that they’ll use throughout their lives.

I’m reminded of something Martha Stewart said when she was released from prison. She was asked if she would do anything differently (referring to her professional life) and she said she would “take better care of her brand”. Very interesting words from her and from Magic Johnson.
