Last stop was the 3 Redneck Tenors on my “Celebratin’ in Branson” trip! This is another exciting show you can find in Branson Missouri!
Branson is a world unto itself…No one can ever know Branson by a brief description….You must travel through it to be acquainted and inspired by it!
The 3 Red Neck Tenors is an entertainment experience. We are talking Music, Dance, and Comedy all rolled into an extreme blockbuster show! “Billy Bob” (Jonathan Fruge), “Billy Joe” (Matthew Lord) and “Billy Billee” (Blake Davidson) are dynamic forces to be reckoned with. Each one has a voice that is potent and energetic, but put them together and you have forceful, powerful… downright electric performance.
Whether they are singing tv themes, broadway, opera or whatever else may come to their minds… the stories and voices all meld perfectly to create a clear and enjoyable experience.
You see Billy Bob, Billy Joe, and Billy Billee all have the same father, but they each have different mothers. You gotta realize that at some point in the show they must acknowledge their ‘Mamas’. Are you getting a picture here of what happened? If you guessed I was chosen as ‘MOM’, then you got it. Billy Joe introduced me as his mom to the audience. So I, along with the 2 other ‘moms’, were escorted onstage where our ‘boys’ danced with us, for us and sang to us as well.
So we were invited to a 3 Redneck Tenors VIP gathering upstairs at The Andy Williams Moon River Theatre. We were treated to a nice sandwich spread along with a vegetable tray, chips and salsa, followed by cake and a prize drawing. After the party, my sis and I were escorted backstage to the ‘green-room’. There I met with the guys and we got to visit before the show.
Matthew (Billy Joe) – I have been doing this 8 years. I created it for a benefit for the Performing Arts Center in Grapevine, TX. I was at the Metropolitan Opera singing. That is what I do, anyway I created it as a benefit and then an agent saw it. Next thing I know, we are in 35 cities and I had to make a decision whether to do this or go back to the Met which I had been doing for 28 years. I decided to do this. The original cast is not here. Blake has been with us 5 years.
Blake (Billy Billee) – Starting my sixth year.
Matthew – And Jonathan… This is his second year.
Q – A lot of artists transition music, stage and on to movies. Do you all ever see yourselves making a movie?
Matthew – Ohhhh! There are so many answers to that! We have been approached over all the years by television and other producers, but nothing has been quite the right fit. Should it happen… I view it more as a ‘spinal-tap’ where it is like following on tour. Sort of a Mockumentary with good old boys.
Matthew – Hah. we just cut one out that was too ambitious…
Jonathan (Billy Bob)- Oh yes, we just cut one a few days ago where we were going to do Beyoncé’s Put a ring on it. We planned to do it in an original Beyoncé costume (leotard and high heels), but that really did not sit well with the audience. Really I don’t think we have ever done anything that was so ambitious that we could not pull it off. Anything that compromises the singing is too ambitious.
Matthew and Blake – Yeah – Anything that compromises the singing is – singing is what the show is all about! Matthew – I mean as much as we wish it was true…NO one wants to see me dance!
(Lots of laughing)
Jonathan – We are more real now with the show since we are not following our lives from babies … we are telling our story from a later period in our lives. We have reached more of the audience because we are not pretending to be children thru half the show. We are also… Blake – Wellll… Not pretending… (laughing) Jonathan – you will notice during the first act we do mature quite a lot as charactors. In the second act you get to meet us as people and you get to experience who we really are.
Blake – It’s the best medicine. With our show the position of classical singing with funny people and laughter is such a new thing. I mean, really, you go back to Victor Borgia who was one of the few classical musicians that was actually funny. Most of the time you can’t find a funny classical musician, instrumentalist, or singer… they are a bunch of dorks. You mix those and people are so surprised and they love it.
Matthew – It separates this show from the Three Texas Tenors or Twelve Irish Tenors. They are strictly concerts. We are, well music first, but people will just not believe they are laughing. Why laugh? Well, the other choice is to cry. I prefer laughing.
Let me just say this was a great interview and there is so much more of it I have, but I am trying to hit some of the highlights. I may have to share more with you later. You may guess there were a lot of laugh breaks. Anyway, I will whole-heartedly tell you you must see the 3 Redneck Tenors the next time you are in Branson.
