Last year, a panel from Disney, Steve Harvey, and Essence Magazine selected 100 “Dreamers” out of 10,000 applicants from an essay competition for the Academy. They then flew the 100 Dreamers (plus one guardian) to Walt Disney World for the 4-Day Academy, free of charge in 2014. The students went through rigorous courses where they learn more about dreams, success and experiences within their “dream” career path.
Why should young students apply for this inspiring event? Well, Let’s look at it from one 2014 student’s perspective, Justin Bell.
Justin’s motivation to apply to the Disney Dreamers Academy stemmed from his desire to extend a helping hand to kidney transplant patients around the globe (his mother was diagnosed with kidney disease). “I feel like it’s my responsibility to do non-profit work and give back to people as much as I possibly can,” he said during Disney Dreamers Academy 2014.
With support from the Academy, Justin learned key entrepreneurial business skills to help grow his foundation in a Deep Dive with Sonia Jackson Myles, Speakers Resource Group member and author of The Sister Accord and 16-year-old CEO of Bledsoe Technologies, Jaylen Bledsoe.
Additionally, Justin received the rare opportunity to seek guest speaker Magic Johnson’s advice. Magic encouraged Justin to “always do every job to the best of your abilities.” Now, as a Disney Dreamers Academy graduate, Justin is equipped with the additional tools and insights he needs to achieve his dreams. Justin successfully launched the Helping Individuals Needing Transplants (HINT) Foundation, which provides comfort items to transplant patients.
Disney seeks students with a winning combination of attributes that reflect strong character, a positive attitude and the persistence to take advantage of opportunities.
