We could have spent our entire getaway at The Crescent Hotel and Spa Resort, but we are in a beautiful Eureka Springs – known as the Little Switzerland of America. It also is called the “Wedding Capital of the South”, and “The Stairstep Town”. The streets wind around the town, and no two intersect at a 90 degree angle. The entire city is on the “National Register of Historic Places” So with that in mind. I will share some other stuff we did…
The historic Beaver Bridge, sometimes called the “Little Golden Gate” of Arkansas, (on Highway 187) crosses the White River and is the last suspension bridge of its type in the state. This was on my list of “I gotta See”!
The bridge is 554 feet long, but only 11 feet wide. As you can figure… that makes it a one way at a time. Made sister a little nervous, but I am happy to say we crossed without a problem.
Every day, 38 million gallons of water pours from the center of Blue Spring into the lagoon. The lagoon overflows into the White River.
An archeological dig in 1971 found artifacts, shellfish and the bones of deer, turtle and other fauna that date back as far as 8000 BC. They also uncovered fire pits, and evidence of life such as small arrow points and Woodward Plain pottery, confirming the presence of American Indians dating back as far as 1700 AD.
The Bluff Shelter at Blue Spring is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Along with the many gardens, there is more than a mile of trails winding through the Blue Spring Heritage Center, filled with colors, textures and the surprise of blooms in every season. Learn more at http://bluespringheritage.com
Of Course any trip to Eureka Springs means you must check the wonderful Victorian homes and stores… Here are a few…
One day, we caught the Trolley (which runs by the Crescent several times a day) and headed to historic downtown. We were starving so we went to the ‘Local Flavor Cafe’ ( http://www.localflavorcafe.net/ ) just across from the downtown trolley depot.
Such great food and people there.
We had Spinach Artichoke Dip with tortilla chips for starters then
The International Burger with onion straws, cheddar and barbeque sauce
You want it… You will find it in this town!
Then we found every woman’s dream at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
We grabbed our goodies and slipped across the street to the Basin Springs Park to enjoy!
Later we jumped on the trolley to head back to the Crescent. A great day!
Almost forgot… another day we ate at the Rowdy Beaver Restaurant ( http://www.rowdybeaver.com/ ) …. Awesome food and our waiter, Joe, was fantastic.
We had the Combo App to start with, then a salad… followed by Rowdys Jumbo Fried Shrimp. I had home fries and sis had baked.
