Well, He is an accomplished singer and songwriter with over a 1000 songs to his credit. Some he sang himself, and some sang by many stars in the music business.
Mel also appeared in several movies, like Love Revival, W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings , The Villain , Smokey and the Bandit II ,The Cannonball Run (, and Uphill All the Way . Of course he added another hit in 1979 with “Coca-Cola Cowboy,” which was used in Clint Eastwood’s movie, Every Which Way but Loose (Mel also made a cameo appearance in that film).
The Grand Ole Opry inducted Mel Tillis on June 9, 2007 and he was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame that same year (about time).
In 1976 he won the CMA’s most coveted award, Entertainer of the Year, and was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Mel also received the National Medal of Arts President Obama in 2012.
At the awesome young age of 83, Mel and his band, the Statesiders, still travel and perform for audiences across the country. With his fun sense of humor and golden voice, he proves he can still thrill music fans with songs and wit.
Mel Tillis is a perfect addition to our trip, and I did see The MOM tapping her foot on several occasions.
You all know how much I was looking forward to sitting down and visiting with Mel.
Sadly, our interview fell through due to his son’s absence from a broken foot, and my contact coordinator’s unexpected surgery. I wish them both a speedy recovery.
That did not stop me from at least meeting Mel.
Just an awesome guy and really … what do you do when you meet a Legend?
Well, you dang near faint! He gave me a big hug and I was one happy gal!
