Creating Sounds as a Form of Art!

soundSound and art are closely related. This is something that is touched on by audio engineering, which is responsible for creating works of art using sounds.

If you are interested in attending an audio engineering school, it is very important that you learn about what that actually means and what you can actually do with it.

Audio engineering is a skill that is needed across a range of different industries, so you could end up having a very interesting career.

Work for Audio Engineers

As an audio engineer, you could get to work as:

  • A television or film sound recordist

  • A studio sound engineer

  • An audio editor

  • A sound editor

  • A musician

  • A sound engineer

  • A DJ

  • And more

sound2Sound professionals have to be very experienced in order to create a sound that is of excellent quality. Their finished results are incorporated into videos, enhancing the emotional impact of the film. This is how sound truly becomes a form of art.

Amateurs almost always focus solely on the visual aspect of any film or video that they make. They presume that a properly working microphone will take care of all the sound issues. In reality, however, it is about far more than just having good quality and functioning equipment. Real effort and skill is involved in getting the sounds right.

In order for a film to flow properly, the sound has to be just right. Depending on what it is used for, it is likely to also have to be of very high quality. People often forget how important the role of sound is, until they watch a film with poor quality music and voice.

If you do want to study audio engineering, it will be best to also specialize in a certain area of the field, as it is very broad. Synthetic sound effects, performance mixing and more are all possible areas to specialize in. However, before you specialize, you will have to learn about the principles of sound and gain a foundation or baseline of knowledge. Only then will you be able to build up more specific skills and become a true specialist.

sound3Once graduated, you will be able to become a true artist, manipulating sound waves so that they create beautiful effects. You will learn all about low and high pressure zones and what a sound wave actually is. Some people have even taken up to turning sounds into visual works of art, with colored sand jumping across a subwoofer, for instance.

Sound is nothing but a vibration, and a vibration has a shape. Your goal as an audio engineer is to make sure that shape is delivered in the purest form possible, so that it is pleasing to the ear of the listener.

This can be achieved on tiny, cheap sound systems, or on huge PA systems that provide sounds for an entire stadium.

This also demonstrates the breadth of industries you could get to work in once you complete your degree.

That does sound like an interesting career path for those that enjoy music or really anyone. To get sound perfect can not be easy. If you want to know how important it really is ask an older person how frustrating it is to go to a movie and not to be able to hear every word!

It is fascinating to watch the audio engineers work and what they can do. I have worked with them in the theatre and I’m always amazed when I watch them work and what an essential part they play in the production.

My husband worked in a studio when he was 18. It was such a fun experience for him. I’m sure our kids would love a program that trained them to work as an audio engineers when they are older.

When you are listening to music, either on the radio or through the tv, you just expect the music to be there. You really don’t think about how it’s produced and engineered. What a great career for those who love music and want to make it even better!

  6. This is definitely a cool career path that people often overlook. And they are so essential! Seems so interesting.
