Sleep hasn’t always gotten the attention it deserves. Even today, many families get a lot less sleep than they should. But, without an adequate amount of sleep, the health of your entire family can suffer.
It is so important to treat your family’s sleep with the respect it deserves, which means getting more of it. Here are a few tips that will enable you to do just that.
Medication and Herbs
Sometimes, medication really is the best way to get a better night’s sleep. That’s especially the case with sleeping disorders, like narcolepsy, that can end up disrupting the entire family all night long.
There are plenty of herbal options too if your sleeping problem is less severe. Melatonin is a great sleep aid, and it is even recommended by some doctors, so make sure you ask about it at your child’s next appointment.
Valerian root is another herb that can be effective, and things like lavender can help you get into the right frame of mind for bed.
Get Into a Routine
One of the best things you can do for your entire family is to get into a routine. And it’s not just about creating a routine for the little ones. Everyone needs to get into a bedtime routine.
- Plan to go to bed within the same hour every night, even on the weekends
- Consider making a bath or a shower a part of your bedtime routine
- Read a book to the kids or read a chapter of a novel
- Set out everyone’s outfit for the next day and make sure lunch is ready
Set yourself up for success the next night by making sure you get up around the same time every day. Sleeping in may sound great in the moment, but it makes following a routine nearly impossible when you aren’t tired for bed the following night.
Turn off the TV
You’ve probably heard this one before, but it is important to repeat. If you want to sleep well, you have to turn off the TV and any other electronics before bed.
Screens are especially troublesome for kids. Many teens will go to bed with their cell phone or a tablet and end up staying awake for hours on end.
Set a good example by turning off the TV at least an hour before bedtime. Put the phones away and put down the tablets. Instead, read a book, play a game, or work on a family craft project.
Do Something to Reduce Stress
Stress keeps many adults and children awake at night. Do something to alleviate some of that stress to sleep better.
Aromatherapy can be very powerful, as can stretching or walking. Many people find meditation to be helpful, and even young children can learn how to pay attention to their breath.
Getting enough sleep can transform the life of your entire family. Give a few of these tips a try and everyone will sleep like a baby!
